Beyond the Counter: Sofia DeJordy’s Rotation with MAPflow

Each rotation offers pharmacy students a different window into the profession. For Sofia DeJordy, a fourth-year PharmD student at the Leslie Dan Faculty of Pharmacy, University of Toronto, that window opened onto something a little different from the community pharmacy settings she knew. We sat down with her to hear about her time at MAPflow, the projects she took on, and how the experience shaped the way she sees her future in pharmacy.

Over the course of her rotation, Sofia contributed across both the technical and clinical sides of the platform.

"As a student at MAPflow, I have contributed to a wide range of projects involving both technical and clinical components. Using my available resources and clinical knowledge, I have updated several minor ailment algorithms, including those for urinary tract infection (UTI), conjunctivitis, and acute rhinosinusitis, to enhance the user experience and ensure they reflect expanded pharmacist scope of practice across provinces. I have also revised articles within the Academy and provided feedback and recommendations to help improve the Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI) and incident reporting platform."

Sofia’s Favourite Project

"During my rotation at MAPflow, one of the most interesting and rewarding projects I undertook was leading a journal club presentation for the team on the role of roflumilast in the treatment of seborrheic dermatitis. This experience challenged me to critically appraise emerging evidence, evaluate its clinical relevance, and translate the findings into practical recommendations for patient care. The questions raised and engaging discussion among the team made this a valuable learning opportunity that helped broaden my own perspectives."

How MAPflow Compared to a Traditional Rotation

"My experience at MAPflow has positively shaped my perspective on the future of my pharmacy career. Before this rotation, I viewed pharmacy through the lens of direct patient care, as my goal has always been to work as a community pharmacist. Stepping outside of my comfort zone to explore a different area of pharmacy has been an incredible experience, and I have gained a deeper appreciation for the impact pharmacists can have beyond individual patient interactions. This experience has also encouraged me to remain open-minded to diverse career opportunities within pharmacy and consider how I can make meaningful contributions to the profession through clinical innovation."
