MAPflow Updates
Introducing our latest innovation: Contraception Prescribing Algorithm now available!
March 21, 2024
MAPflow is thrilled to unveil our newest feature tailored to empower pharmacists in jurisdictions such as British Columbia (BC).
We are delighted to introduce the latest addition to our platform: a cutting-edge general contraception prescribing algorithm designed to seamlessly integrate into pharmacists’ scope of practice and deliver individualized care to patients.
As of June 1, 2023, pharmacists in BC saw their scope of practice expanded to include contraception prescribing, marking a significant milestone alongside prescribing for 21 different minor ailments.
At MAPflow, we are committed to delivering streamlined prescribing support that not only meets but exceeds all regulatory and practice requirements.
How does it work?
When you access the assessment tool from aBC pharmacy, you will now see the option to prescribe for “Contraception.”
To ensure eligibility, the system will prompt you to verify that the patient is at least 12 years old and has begun menstruating. Additionally, confirmation of eligibility under all PPMAC criteria is required.
Once these criteria are met, the assessment tool will guide you through the selection process of the desired contraception type. Currently, BC pharmacists can prescribe a range of therapeutic options, including:
● Combined hormonal contraceptives
● Progestin-only oral contraceptives
● Depot injections
● Hormonal implants
● Levonorgestrel intrauterine devices/systems
● Copper intrauterine devices
Following the selection of desired contraceptive,MAPflow will lead you through a series of contraindications to therapy, ensuring patient safety. These include:
● Criteria to rule out pregnancy
● A comprehensive list of relative and absolute contraindications specific to the chosen contraceptive
As with all MAPflow assessments, you’ll also receive detailed guidance on potential drug interactions and additional considerations, optimizing the effectiveness of therapy.
