New Ailments Coming Soon in Ontario — Get Prepared with MAPflow

February 25, 2025

Ontario is once again expanding the list of minor ailments that pharmacists can prescribe for, a move that strengthens the role of pharmacists in primary care and improves patient access to timely treatment. We’re expecting a set of 14 additional minor ailments to come into effect for Ontario pharmacists in the coming months, and we’re working hard to make the transition seamless for you.

As these changes roll out, pharmacies will need to quickly adapt — but MAPflow is already ahead of the curve, providing pharmacy teams with the tools they need. Some of the 14 new ailments are already live on the platform, with the rest rolling out in the coming weeks to ensure you have everything you need when the changes take effect.

MAPflow: Built for Expansion, Designed for Efficiency

MAPflow has consistently stayed ahead of these regulatory changes in each province we serve. When Ontario introduced pharmacist-led prescribing for the initial batch of minor ailments, MAPflow had already developed intuitive algorithms to streamline patient interactions — we were ready before the deadline, so you could hit the ground running. As more ailments were added, MAPflow continued to anticipate the needs of pharmacies, updating our algorithms in advance to accommodate new conditions and prescribing criteria.

With this upcoming expansion, MAPflow has once again proactively built the necessary clinical decision-support algorithms. This ensures that pharmacies using MAPflow can seamlessly integrate the new prescribing capabilities without delay, empowering pharmacists to focus on patient care.

Streamlining Access to Pharmacist-Led Care

Many provinces are continuing to steadily expand pharmacists' prescribing authority, allowing them to manage a growing list of minor ailments. This shift is critical in addressing healthcare system bottlenecks, reducing wait times at clinics, and ensuring patients receive care when and where they need it. However, with each expansion, pharmacies face new challenges: adjusting workflows, training staff, and ensuring compliance with evolving regulations. MAPflow offers pharmacies an optimized way to handle increased patient volume while maintaining accuracy and compliance. By simplifying the prescribing process, MAPflow helps pharmacies capitalize on this policy shift, ensuring more patients receive the care they need — faster and more efficiently.

Staying Ahead in a Rapidly Evolving Landscape

Pharmacy teams have enough on their plates without having to scramble every time a new regulatory change takes effect. MAPflow eliminates that stress by anticipating changes before they happen. Just as it did with previous expansions, MAPflow ensures that pharmacies can hit the ground running when the new minor ailments are officially added, without the typical learning curve or workflow disruptions.

As Ontario continues to empower pharmacists with expanded prescribing authority, pharmacy teams need solutions that evolve just as quickly. MAPflow has proven time and again that it’s not just keeping up — it’s leading the way.
