The Heart of Ayr: Honouring Patrick MacNeil and MacNeil & Dodd Pharmacy

March 2, 2026

When you step into MacNeil & Dodd Pharmacy, the first thing you might notice is the entryway filled with drawings from kids in the community. Or maybe it's the entire right wall brimming with photos of the sports teams that Patrick MacNeil and his pharmacy have sponsored over the past 30 years. Alternatively, it could be the massive candy bin on the counter that Patrick insists you pick from, whether you're a young child getting cold medicine or an elderly community member collecting a regular prescription. More than likely, one of the first things you notice is the pharmacy team knowing every patient by name, and greeting all who enter with a bright smile.

Whatever detail catches your eye first, the truth is clear: MacNeil & Dodd Pharmacy is a true pillar of the community and the genuine heart of Ayr, Ontario. MAPflow is honored to name Patrick and his pharmacy as the inaugural recipient of the Community Pillar Award for Excellence in Minor Ailment Delivery and Patient Care.

We developed this award to celebrate what is at the core of pharmacy: community, empathy, and a relentless dedication to patient care. As MAPflow continues to innovate and evolve, we are committed to upholding these values. Patrick's generosity and kindness, both within and beyond the pharmacy, make him an exemplary inaugural winner.

When our team sat down with Patrick and his team at the pharmacy, they welcomed us with the same warmth they show every patient. The stories they shared help explain why this small-town pharmacy has become indispensable to Ayr.

The Heart of a Small Town

Since opening in 1995, Patrick has cared for countless patients, many of whom for the majority of their lives. He’s been able to watch people grow through every stage of life, from childhood to teen years to adulthood and then becoming parents themselves, supporting and caring for them every step of the way. Patrick had this to say about his experience:

"We've got pictures on the wall of when we sponsored them when they played ringette, and now they're coming in for birth control or diapers for their kids, which is really funny. I don't feel like it's been 30 years, which probably means I made the right decision [Choosing to open a community pharmacy in a rural town]." - Patrick

Patrick's community is endlessly appreciative of the pharmacy and how it upholds the community. Whether it's bringing in fresh produce from the farm or sharing kind words, Ayr ensures Patrick and his team know how appreciated they are.

Patrick and his staff are truly phenomenal. Everyone is always smiling and a pleasure to deal with, and they are so helpful and attentive. This pharmacy is truly exactly what you would picture and imagine when described as a small town pharmacy - they smile and call you by name... you are more like a friend and neighbor than you are a customer! Ayr is lucky to have Patrick and his friendly staff, and they are much appreciated. Thank you for all you have done for my wife and I, and for all you give to this community." - Devin S (patient)

“Patrick Jen and team are the bestest pharmacy team around ! They are the heartbeat and the backbone of Ayr ! Thank you for keeping Mom healthy and me sane and Ayr beautiful!” - Diane R (patient)

Whether you're visiting his team at the pharmacy, playing on a sports team he sponsored, watching a show at the local theater he helped build, or spending time at the skate park he funded, it's hard to find a place or person in Ayr that hasn't been touched by his kindness.

Accessible, Frontline Care

Since pharmacists’ scope expanded in Ontario in January of 2023, Patrick and his team have utilized MAPflow to deliver minor ailment care to Ayr.

“90% of them are UTIs for women. It doesn't mean much technically for us, but I know how much it means for women. It only takes 10, 15 minutes to get the job done, and then they're on their way again, instead of waiting for an hour or two in the doctor's office. It makes a huge difference." - Patrick

Since 2023, MAPflow has enabled pharmacists across Canada to conduct more than 250,000 patient assessments. It’s easy to get lost in the numbers, but behind that statistic are a quarter million times someone didn't have to rearrange their day, miss work, or sit in a waiting room for hours. They're people like Patrick's neighbors in Ayr, who walked into their local pharmacy with a problem and walked out 15 minutes later with a solution.

Investing in the Next Generation

The pharmacy has launched several pharmacy careers, hiring and mentoring students who went on to pharmacy school and became pharmacists. Aram Mohammadi, who currently works as a pharmacist at MacNeil & Dodd, began as a student with Patrick.

“He has definitely helped me shape how I want my practice to be and how I want to interact with patients. I come to work laughing every day.” - Aram

Madeleine Rivard is another pharmacist working at MacNeil and Dodd pharmacy, who started her journey as a student.

“I’ve worked with Patrick since I was 15. I always wanted to come back and see what it was like working [as a pharmacist in the community that I grew up in.] Getting to know people, seeing their faces when they come in, and getting that positive feedback, it's been nice.” - Madeline

In nurturing young professionals, Patrick ensures the same care and connection that defined his own career will continue for generations to come. Patrick’s impact reaches far beyond the counter, and well into the future.

A Labor of Love

The relationships, trust, smiles, and resounding laughs from the pharmacy are not a coincidence, or even simply a product of time, they’re the direct result of Patrick continuously and selflessly dedicating himself to uplifting the Ayr community.

“The community is really nice because Patrick has built up the community for the past 30 years. Aram noted. “Everybody really trusts him.” - Aram

At the center of it all is Patrick’s belief that work should be rooted in joy and connection. When asked how he knew he was exactly where he's supposed to be, this is what he had to say:

“We make fun of people all the time. We give the candy to the kids. Everybody has fun here. If you love your job, you never work a day in your life. And I think I've been lucky enough to really enjoy what I do.” - Patrick
