Pharmacy Town Hall: Otitis Media, Otitis Externa and Sinusitis Assessments

An information session on the new Pharmacy Plus PEI program for acute otitis media, otitis externa and sinusitis assessments. With the PEI Pharmacy Association, the PEI College of Pharmacy, the PEI Department of Health and Wellness and MAPflow in one place, pharmacy teams can get their questions answered as they prepare to offer these assessments.

Ear and sinus infections in PEI pharmacies

Pharmacy Plus PEI is the program through which pharmacists on Prince Edward Island assess and prescribe for common ailments. Its new assessments cover three infections:

  • Acute otitis media, a middle ear infection
  • Otitis externa, an outer ear infection often called swimmer’s ear
  • Sinusitis, a sinus infection

The PEI Pharmacy Association (PEIPhA) organized this town hall so pharmacy teams preparing to offer these assessments can put their questions to the PEI College of Pharmacy, the PEI Department of Health and Wellness and MAPflow in one place.

On the agenda

  • Procuring otoscopes through government funding
  • Funded education and training opportunities
  • MAPflow’s PEI-specific assessment tool and algorithm, with built-in resources and demos to support patient assessment
  • Program logistics, eligibility and billing
  • Questions from pharmacy teams

MAPflow for PEI pharmacists

MAPflow is a preferred platform of PEIPhA, built for the way Pharmacy Plus PEI works:

  • Made for Pharmacy Plus PEI. Guided assessments follow the PEI College of Pharmacy’s framework, and MAPflow applies the Pharmacy Plus billing codes for you.
  • Strep A, set up for PEI rules. MAPflow’s Group A Strep assessment offers molecular point-of-care tests such as Abbott ID NOW, because rapid antigen tests aren’t eligible for reimbursement in PEI. The test result carries through to the conclusion, the matching Pharmacy Plus billing code and the reports, and for second-line antibiotics MAPflow points to Health PEI’s antibiogram.
  • Ear and sinus assessments. At this town hall, MAPflow shows its PEI-specific assessment tool and algorithm for acute otitis media, otitis externa and sinusitis, with built-in resources and demos to support patient assessment.
  • Documentation written for you. Each assessment produces a structured report, a notification for the patient’s primary care provider and a patient-friendly care summary, and MAPflow prompts the follow-up.

MAPflow demonstrated its Strep A assessment at the PEI Pharmacy Town Hall on Group A Strep in December 2025, alongside PEIPhA, the PEI Department of Health and Wellness, the PEI College of Pharmacy and Abbott.
